Faisal Chohan, a Senior TED Fellow and TEDxIslamabad organizer, will now continue his mapping work with a related mission: Improving sanitation in order to prevent the spread of cholera—a bacterial infection in the small intestine, primarily caused by drinking water or eating food that has been contaminated by feces of an infected person. Dr. Yu-Ling Cheng delivers a great overview of the current state of sanitatio and gives an over of her current efforts. She speaks of how she came to understand it to be essential to be part of the sanitation solution. She is addressing a group of student on the cusp of pick paths to travel starting colleges. She delivers a message that will ring true many regardless of age and path now traveling.
Dr. Yu-Ling Cheng is the Director of the Centre for Global Engineering (CGEN) and Professor of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University Of Toronto. CGEN was established in 2009 to be the focal point and major driver in preparing engineering graduates to meet challenges, responsibilities and opportunities in a globally sustainable future. Under her leadership, CGEN is developing new courses and academic programs in global engineering. She also leads new global engineering research initiatives, most notably a project under the “Re-invent the Toilet” challenge posed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Aside from her interests in global engineering, Professor Cheng’s research interests have centered around drug delivery, and the understanding of transport processes in polymeric and physiologic systems. She is a member the Teaching Academy, the highest honour for teaching at the University of Toronto. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Academics Without Borders, an NGO whose mission is to enhance higher education capacity in developing countries.

For someone who makes 1 dollar a day, with little water to be used for sanitation, in challenging locations, having a lack of space, and no existing sewage system.

X-Runner is designed with the following principles / features:
– It must be desirable
– It is private / respects privacy and dignity – it is in the home
– The waste is easily transported from the home by the resident (not surprisingly the job falling to the women-typically)
– The toilet base is also the transportation system in the form of a wheel
– There is a central place for collecting the waste from multiple homes
– This central place is desirable to visit based on the ability to socialize with friends and the access to amenities
– This central collection point has it has a biodigester
– The waste is turned into a useful resources – energy and fertilize
– The energy is returned home from this same place making a complete circle

Oklahoma State University Professor AJ Johannes has a dirty job. Along with his colleagues, Johannes is reinventing the toilet with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Through his research, Johannes and his team have the potential to affect 2.5 million people without modern plumbing.

The talk is titled: Wastewater, a resource or a weapon of mass destruction?
Valérie shows us how to turn recycled wastewater into a commoditized resource, improve water sanitation, provide efficient water usage, and reduce price volatility.
Valérie Issumo is the CEO of Prana Sustainable Water company (http://www.pranasustainablewater.ch) . An economist, she worked for 15 years as a soft commodities trader and as a trainer in Belgium, Uruguay, Cameroon and Switzerland. Throughout her career she has fought for sustainability and risk mitigation in the entire value chain of traded goods. She is a university lecturer and also a consultant for food security, socially responsible investments, pricing ecosystems and the assessment of water interdependencies. Valérie holds an MBA, has studied at various international water centres, and was a recipient of the Prize of the Belgian Minister of Foreign Trade.

In many cities in developing countries, residents have piped water supplies. But there’s a catch: the water is only available through the pipes for a few hours at a time, and people have no way of knowing when that will be. As a result, residents (mostly women and the poor) spend their days just waiting for the water to arrive. Anu Shiridharan from NextDrop, one of the speakers at TEDxGateway, has a solution.
Anu Sridharan graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in December 2010 with a Master’s degree in Civil Systems engineering, and received her Bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley in 2009 as well.
During her time there, Anu researched the optimization of pipe networked systems in emerging economies as well as business models for the dissemination of water purification technologies for arsenic removal in emerging economies.
Anu also served as the Education and Health director for a water/sanitation project in the slums of Mumbai, India called “Haath Mein Sehat” where she piloted a successful volunteer recruitment and community training model.
